SmartWatch

I'm now an smart watch - I'm watch - owner for about a month or so.

Is it a daily watch? Yes and no. It's a good watch and it syncs with iPhone well, but the battery life could have been better. I can't have one more device that needs to be charged regularly. I'm watch surely needed better battery...something that lasted atleast a week.

Other than battery life issue, it's good to use on regular basis. The notifications related to SMS worked well. The call quality wasn't great .. Just about average. However what it did well was sync with my contacts. Yet, I didn't find option to search through them.

The touch screen is ok but not great. After using iphone for long time one expects great touch screen devices.

I haven't use other functionalities and watch apps as much, yet.

Is it with the money today ? The answer is NO! If they improve upon battery life, make touch screen better, have great call quality etc, then it is going to be useful. But do they have time to improve upon the watch .... i dont think so. With rumours about Apple iWatch now emerging, it's a tough battle for I'm watch going ahead.

Good luck to them!

Personal Cloud setup with Timecapsule

I recently bought Apple Timecapsule (TC) - the goal was to create central server with content (primarily movies) that I can hook up to my Apple TV and watch movies anytime, without switching on my PC / Laptop.
When I tried to search on google for help on getting this configured, I couldn't find much info, but I got enough clues on the same.

I connected my TC to my existing router through Airport utility from my PC. Unfortunately I couldn't do it from my iphone or mac. Don't know why this happened as logically it should have been plug and play with mac devices.
Once I setup my TC with my router, I downloaded FileExplorer from AppStore and added server. Used help of inet app to figure out the IP address of TC. Through FileExplorer I was able to browse the content of TC on my iphone and also AirPlay it with my appletv.

I also was able to add the TC settings to my appletv using the IP address of TC. That was simple and this allows me to access the TC content on my Appletv directly without using my iphone. This was possible only on my Jailbroken AppleTV and not on the other unjailbroken AppleTV I have.

First few hours with windows 8

Though I have been thinking about upgrading one of my laptops to windows 8 for a while, I finally did it yesterday.

Here are my first impressions :

A) Initially it seemed to be a different world and difgicult to use, after windows 8 got installed, but after understating the basics of how it works, it seems to be the same old windows 7 with a wrapper on top that allows tiles and live feeds.

B) The biggest change is that there is no start button and that is what one needs to get used it

C) It isn't easy migration as I lost few SW like msoffice, printer drivers etc during the up-gradation and had to reinstall them. So, be sure you have those CDs handy before you upgrade.

Is it worth upgrade? That is the moot question. My laptop was on Vista and so it was worth the upgrade as Vista was too slow. Not sure if that would be the case with Windows 7 users. At-least for now, I won't upgrade my PC from windows 7 to windows 8.

Andriod App scene - a complete let down

I have been seriously thinking of shifting to a Android phone. I always guessed that developers would be building apps for both platforms.

I use many home automation gadgets and am quite used to Nuvo, Wiser, Withings, Hikvsion, Denon apps on my iphone / ipad. To my shock, i found that Nuvo / Wiser / Withings BP apps not being available on android.

So, i have to stick to iOS eco-system till these specific apps are available for andriod. I hope the developers of these systems / apps realise it fast that they cant just make apps for iphone.

Stuck with Apple Ecosystem -- iOS6 makes it you think again

Why did they do this? Why were they more conscious of Google as Competition and less about customer n their needs?

It's really sad to see that Apple has removed google maps and YouTube from iOS6 and not given good replacement options. Though I had read about problems with Apple Maps, I still hoped it will work fine ... But it was not to be. With no default YOUTUBE, I downloaded it from AppStore but I was shocked to find that YouTube no longer supports Airplay Video.

Since old docks won't be no longer compatible to iPhone 6, I was wondering if I should start moving out of Apple Ecosystem .... But, with whole range of Apple products / supported products (Apple TV, AirPlay AV receiver, AirPrint Printer etc) at my home, it seems I have no choice but to stick with Apple.

However, i m now seriously considering shifting to android or windows phone. I believe android / apps does support AirPlay but haven't been able to find any info about AirPlay on android phones. With interesting line of new phones coming up, this search will start getting more profound.

Fitness Now - Fitbit

Have just started to use the new age fitness pedometer. The Fitbit.

I was looking at a accurate pedometer, which is small to carry and can sync with my apps, and Fitbit fit the bill.

Though Fitbit has various functionalities like sleep analysis etc, I have just used the step meter and find that quite interesting and surprisingly accurate.

Multi Room Music

Nuvo Grand Concerto is a nice solution for multi-room music system for your house. With Touch panels for each room and 6 source input, it is a bliss for music lovers. It is a definite recommend, though its pricey. But I think its worth the investment.

The only catch is to wire your house. I know that is not a good solution for existing homes, but if you are building a new home, then it shouldn't be a problem.

For wireless options, one will have to go for Sonos or Squeezebox.

Ringtones become advert

Yes, google is planning to do so. Basis location and caller, google is going to play advertisement on your phone instead of the regular ringtone.

It seems to be a interesting concept. But not sure if users will be happy adopting it as they may not be able to recognise calls to their phones as each time a new advert will play.

What do you say?
